It started with an infatuation with anything Jane Austinish and was further fueled by series such as Downton Abbey and Call the Midwife… and now I am hopelessly addicted to watching and reading anything even remotely related to that time period. I already purchased the The World of Downton Abbey and just simply wanted more. This weekend I discovered the funny and sweet memoirs of Margaret Powell, the lowest of kitchen maids who tells her tale through her book, Below Stairs.
Even though I am resolutely against making New Year’s Resolutions, I did decide that I wanted to watch tv less in 2013 and read more. So far I have plowed through all the books I purchased last summer when we were in London. Among my fictional favorites so far? The Thirteen Tale and The House by the Sea.
What about you? Are you an avid reader? Do you find it as difficult as I do to find time for books? What is on your reading list these days?

Love the simplicity of this photo.
I love reading, it so much better than television. I read at night after everyone has gone to bed. That is my time.
Oh, and I am reading A Dance With Dragons, book 5 of George R. R. Martin’s Fire and Ice Series (Game of Thrones). It is graphic and brutal, but I am dying to see who comes out on top. My book club has selected The Aviator’s Wife by Melanie Benjamin. I haven’t started yet, but hear it is well worth the read. Last month we read, A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini – a very bittersweet story.
Oooo, thanks for sharing! I, too, have been on a Downton Abbey kick and will definitely check out the Midwife series and the other books you mentioned.
Lately have been reading “children’s” literature—bundling up with Laura Ingalls Wilder and Anne Shirley. I like to consider myself an avid reader, but it’s it been harder since my commute is shorter than it used to be. As soon as I immerse myself in my book, we pull up to my station—or, I’ve been walking to work lately because the weather is brisk enough to be invigorating, but not too cold that I get frostbitten
.
Below Stairs sounds good. I will look for that one since I have been obsessed with all things Downton Abbey and Call the Midwife. Thank you for sharing.
I love reading and although carving out time to do it is hard (usually right before bedtime) it is wonderful escapism.
Right now I am reading Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn and after that I am hoping to jump into The Thirteenth Tale (glad it is one of your favourites).
Happy Reading!
I had not heard of Call the Midwafe before. Thanks so much for the tip!
im trying hard but determined to fit reading books into my daily life…If it’s a book Im loving, I’ll switch off and get right into it! Recently read ‘On Rue Tatin’ a food/travel book and ‘What Remains’ by Carole Radziwill…a beautiful memoir! Im currently reading a biography on Anna Wintour, the editor of US Vogue…its a biography she didn’t approve of so that makes it even better – so far, its been good!!!
