One of our very favorite things to do when we travel is to visit the grocery store. Even in the US we use to do the same thing if we traveled to a new city because there was always the chance that there would be a new food… or better yet, a new treat to try!
Since moving to Denmark, we have discovered the wonderful and sweet world of Tom’s, Denmark’s largest producer of candy and chocolate. They make everything from licorice pandas to caramel filled turtles to creamy chocolate licorice sticks. With a humble beginning in 1924, in a small pharmacy, Tom’s began to grow in popularity as it was sold in bakeries and ice creams shops throughout the late 20′s. Eventually it spread to large kiosks and experienced huge success over the next nearly 100 years to become what it is today… An iconic name in Denmark and one that we have grown to love!
These little hearts have been making my sweet tooth so happy lately and I thought maybe one of you would like a bag to try? Just leave me a comment telling me what you like to splurge on or perhaps what you have planned for Valentine’s and I will draw a random winner on Wednesday!

Grocery stores are always top of our to see list, too! It’s always so much fun to see what the locals eat, things I’ve never even thought of, and whenever we go back to the US we are astounded by all the new products. I haven’t tried Tom’s, but I will be on the look out for these adorable hearts today. Have you tried the Odense Dark Chocolate Coating in chocolate chip cookies yet? They are amazing!
No plans for Valentine’s Day, but my mother’s group will be meeting on Friday with our littles and let me just say there will chocolate.
My weekly splurge is going to a new restaurant. It’s so much fun to try new foods and meet new people, whether in a really nice restaurant or a cozy little coffee shop. My recent favorite is Church Street Coffee and Books where I tried the earl grey latte (delicious!) and there were shelves full of colorful children’s books lining the shelves, surrounding people enjoying each other’s company, sipping their steamy drinks and nibbling on their sweets, and windows full of muted light gave it all such a lovely warmness.
My weekly splurge is Werther’s hard carmel candies.
I could spend hours just looking around in a grocery store but we’re retired and my hubby always goes with me. He doesn’t see why I just can’t run in, while he parks out front, and grab what I need…lol…When he is not with me my splurge is definitely a coffee, pastry and sit down so I can people watch and just be alone in a crowded store. Have a lovely Valentine’s Day with your family.
I love most anything chocolate, but this week I’m indulging in Brach’s Red Imperials. They’re super hard to find during other times of the year, so I try to load up on them now. I love to cook with them…….or eat them by the handfuls!
As for what I’ll do for V’tine’s Day…..well son #3 turns 18 on the 17th, and I plan to bake a red velvet cake to celebrate the day of love AND just how much I love him!!!
These look amazing! Yummy! Happy Valentines Day!
Hi Tina
My splurge would be Cadbury Caramello Koalas.
My plans for Valentines have been put on hold due to being put on bed rest for pregnancy. Maybe there will be a nice romance movie on the TV to watch?
I love to splurge on Toms when I go to Denmark to visit my daughter.! I often think of your mother….we both have daughters living in Denmark…I understand the distance that separates. Visiting Denmark and my daughter and husband and my grand children is very special and I always bring back a good supply of Toms! Love your blog and reading about your life in Denmark…..enjoy your Toms!
Let’s trade! I will send you some of Windells Chocolates (my friends company – she lived in Belgium for five years) and we can swap : ) Truffles, chocolate covered licorce, pecan toffee….the options are sweet!
Oh and no plans for Valentine’s Day. A single’s life.

Now this is a drawing I can’t miss out on, for I too, grew to love Toms during my time in DK.
I am actually celebrating Valentine’s Day by throwing a little party for the girls. I made my own marzipan [with my deepest Danish love] and {splurged} on a bag of gluten-free shortbread cookie mix. Of course, I will be dipping both in chocolate! There will be plenty of treats, tea, coffee, and laughs to go around. Bliss!
my latest splurge has been fresh flowers. winter is in full swing here in toronto, so i find some tulips really brighten the place up.
we do the same thing when we travel – we always check out the grocery stores and hardware stores too.
