for a {rainy} day: drawing vacation plans

Collages7 Last week our kids had a winter vacation from school, but the weather outside was cold and a bit dreary so we spent much of the week entertaining ourselves indoors.  One day we decided to pull out a roll of paper and the crayons, but instead of telling the kids to just simply draw something, we asked them to draw a picture of what they were looking forward to doing this summer.

Collages6 Sometimes giving kids a theme or a starting point can be helpful in jump starting their creativity.  They said they couldn’t wait to go to the beach, eat ice cream, and have a road trip.  We daydream about traveling all the time and like to involve the kids because sometimes they haveplaces they want to see or ideas that we had not even thought about!

The kids loved this simple project so much that we are already talking about future possible subjects: favorite places we have been, favorite foods, a gift wish list… the possibilities are endless!  After the kids were finished, with the help of a little washi tape, we hung their artwork up so we could all admire it.  Eventually we will take it down and put up a new one, because that is what is so great about using simple supplies and temporary adhesive!

What subjects do you think your kids would enjoy drawing?  Don’t have kids?  No worries because this project is sure to make you a favorite aunt or friend!

Here are a few supplies that you might want to keep on hand for this rainy day project:

What a great idea! What are your summer plans! We are going on a road trip to Colorado and Utah. We might also go to the beach for a week, but I am still working on that one. Have a great week!

My kiddos love getting the role of Ikea paper out, stretching it the length of the room, and drawing or painting a huge picture. We’ve spent many a wet afternoon doing this. It can start out as a Star Wars theme one end from Luca and flowers and rainbows the other end from Ruby. I recenlty melted down all our old pieces of broken crayons, and made chunky handful ones of multi-colours, all ready for the next giant picture. http://hibiscusbloem.blogspot.com/2012/11/mulit-coloured-recycled-crayons.html
