My husband travels to Germany several times a year without the kids and me, which is not our preferred way of travel but just the way it has to be sometimes. The first time he went I made him promise that he would bring home a pretzel for me because if I have to be at home, doing the single mom thing, for several days I needed something to look forward to! The last time we were in the Frankfurt airport together we tried a really great deli/bakery called Meyer’s Deli. (I got super excited when we got back to Copenhagen and found a bakery here by the same name but they are not the same.) I always like to travel with a fruity candy because it helps calm my motion sickness and Meyer’s Deli had bags of fresh gummy bears that looked amazing. What is really fun about these bags of gummy bears is that they also come with several super sized bears that are about the size of six regular ones. We were hooked!
So, now my husband has to bring home pretzels AND gummy bears from Meyer’s Deli. The only trouble this time was that his flight out of Frankfurt was in the B terminal and security does not allow you to check in through any terminal other than the one you are assigned to. And, yes, of course, he was not going out through the B Terminal, but the A Terminal. My guy is quite determined and once getting through security in the A Terminal he began hunting for a way to get over to Terminal B because he knew the kids and I were very excited about the treats we knew he would be bringing home.
Just as he was about to give up, his determination paid off. Apparently there is a nondescript door that leads down four flights of stairs out of Terminal A which then takes you down a people mover that stretches as far as the eye can see (my guy is near sighted, but he walked ten minutes on these people movers, so maybe he wasn’t exaggerating!) Ultimately he ended up at yet another four flights of stairs up that led him to a completely nondescript door, but on the other side was Terminal B and the much awaited Meyer’s Deli.
When he told me all this I was in complete awe that he would go to so much trouble for the kids and me, but I thought it was the sweetest thing ever! I wondered if he was alone in his journey from Terminal A to B and then back. He said on his way over there wasn’t a soul to be found, but on the way back there were several others. Can you just imagine him calling home to tell me he was taken down by security while hunting down gummy bears and pretzels for me?
Well, I thought such a thing deserved a little shout out here on the blog and if you are ever flying through Frankfurt stop by Meyer’s Deli and grab a bag (or two) of gummy bears and a pretzel. And if you happen to be walking past a newsstand and catch a glimpse of the latest Elle Decor France and UK… well, that would just be icing on the cake!

Your guy is a sweet hubby and dad! And I love German gummy bears! I don’t remember what brand it was but I bought them at a cute little store in the Zeil in Frankfurt…. I love simple pleasures, pretzels and gummy bears included..
i’m familiar with that crazy walk from A to B – weirdly, i find Frankfurt to be one of the most unfriendly travel transfer experiences so generally i try to avoid it (some people love it though) but next time i’m there, i’ll definitely put meyer’s deli on the list. maybe this airport can be redeemed still yet!
I would have to think a while – SO many airports in my lifetime.
Did you see my msg to you on FB? I need you to tell me what I *must* see in Spain – going there in June. AND hope to take either a day or weekend trip to Morocco.
Hugs!
Beth
Ha! Further proof (if we needed it) of what a keeper he is! That surely did deserve a shout-out. Yum-o!
oh my word, I’m amazed that FRA functions as well as it does…good grief the DISTANCES are practically Olympic. I left my travel wallet on a plane once during a layover at FRA. I was en route to the Middle East, you know, where a passport would be extra helpful. Yeah, got off the plane, took a bus halfway across the planet to the terminal, wandered around miles of nondescript hallways with construction going on in the rafters before I realized my missing gear. Heart attack. 19yrs old, alone, and halfway to my destination. Didn’t even have the ticket stub to remember what flight number I had just been on. I was supposed to be getting on my connecting flight…with no money, ID, or official letters that would let me enter my destination country, let alone plane tickets…I was so freaked out I was beyond hysterics! The first uniformed person I saw ended up working magic on her radio and everything worked out fine, but for about 20min I thought I was a gonner.
I try to remember that story whenever I get annoyed at FRA nowadays. I kind of can’t stand it, so I’ll have to keep an eye out for Meyer’s Deli when we head down again next month!
@Ana Gaby Amen to that!
@The New Diplomat’s Wife I’m just trying to make all these crazy airports a little brighter! We avoid Charles de Gaulle like the PLAGUE, though.
@Beth Hey! I’ve checked and re-checked and couldn’t find a message from you. Did you send me a message or add it to my wall? Where will you be going in Spain and Morocco? It happens to be my specialty!
@Bethany So true! He is a great find! Good thing I knew want I wanted even from such a young age, right?
@Juliette OM Goodness! I am literally sitting here nearly hyperventilating on your behalf! We are so spoiled by the Copenhagen airport that it is pretty hard to beat. Most airports in major cities are beasts, but I am happy to console myself with candy and foreign magazines! LOL!!
Man hunted down by airport security while hunting gummy bears, details at ten
I love it.
We spent four years in Bonn and fell in love with Ritter Sport chocolate, Leibniz butter biscuits, Kolsch, and Haribo gummy bears (the factory for Haribo is in Bonn, we took a tour. You can buy a 5 lb gummy bear!) I have a friend who now permanently calls Germany home and she frequently sends me pfferminz Ritter Sport which you just can’t find here in the US!
