almost done {obsessing}

by Tina on May 12, 2010

homesweethomeOh, who are we kidding?  Like I’m going to stop talking about home any time soon!  But I won’t bore you to death with another day of whining… I promise!  Things are really picking up for us.  Next week we will pack our crate, so I spent today pulling everything together and completing my “mock crate.”  Yes, that’s right.  I have a section in my sister’s basement taped off with the dimensions of the crate and it is currently packed with all of the things we will be shipping to Denmark.  It sounds like a simple task, but let me assure you that it is much like a grown up version of Tetris.  Every inch counts and I am determined to squeeze in one last jar of peanut butter or a pound of Starbuck’s coffee or whatever else I can!

At first the kids were bummed out about putting their toys away, but we have decided as a family that it isn’t too bad.  It’s kind of like wrapping up everything you own so that you can have one big celebration when you get to “unwrap” it all later.  It’s WAY better than Christmas!

Tomorrow I have to start packing our suitcases to ensure that I can fit everything left over in those bags… otherwise it has to fit into the crate… or it gets left behind, which at this point is altogether likely.

I wonder if I am the only one who packs this far in advance?  Maybe!  But I think it helps an overseas move go very smoothly… I’m just admitting all my superhero secrets!

That’s AWESOME :) You are so my organizational hero! LOL

Believe me, you’re not the only one who plans and packs and re-packs like a madwoman, weeks in advance! It’s become quite the art-form for me. I secretly enjoy it quite a bit, although it is a stressful process. It’s like a big puzzle to solve. Right now I’m feeling a bit discombobulated, as we are two days from our one-year anniversary in this apartment, with NO plans of moving! That’s NEVER happened in our 13 years of marriage! So as I read all your posts, part of me feels a bit of that wanderlust kicking in. Just call me crazy!

You can skip the peanut butter and Starbuck’s coffe, we’ve got them here in Europe. Save the space for some scrapbooking supplies. ;)

Love all your home cards — and go ahead and obsess away. I can’t imagine trying to undertake what you’re doing. I’m not all that organized under normal circumstances, but if I were moving overseas and packing a crate I’m pretty sure I’d approach it much as you are. Lots of last minute surprises would not make for a peaceful move! On a side note, years ago a family moved onto our street after having spent some time overseas — I’m thinking Germany. When their crates arrived, one of them absolutely reeked. When they unpacked it, they realized that the movers had packed the pail of dirty diapers. Eewww. So — hopefully you won’t have any unpleasant surprises like that! (Sounds like there won’t be room for a diaper pail anyway!) Enjoy these days with your extended family and friends, but still look forward to that feeling of being “home” with just your little traveling tribe. It will all be here before you know it.
