an {american} fix

I love eating local food.  In fact, one of our very favorite things to do when we visit another country or city, is to visit the super market.  There is always something new to discover and we are eager to try new things.  But some days I just need an American “fix” which is why I got so excited when I saw this recipe on Smitten Kitchen for goldfish crackers. It reminded me of how long it had been since I had made Cheese Its… but what fun would it be to stop there?

Especially when there are “delicacies” like poptarts

and graham crackers to try…

Ultimately it was the oreo cookies recipe that had me running to my kitchen and baking into the wee hours of the night.  It’s not like I couldn’t go to the store and buy a pack if I really needed them (and we won’t discuss how much my little “fix” would cost me!) But there is something so deeply satisfying when one mixes and stirs seemingly tasteless and pointless ingredients to create something that instantly transports one to their late 1980′s floral infused living room.  In that moment it is just you, a package of double stuff Oreos, and the latest Muppet Babies… well, maybe that and the rough feel of the dusty rose carpet between your toes.

Ahhh… funny how cookies can affect one so deeply.  The graham crackers were a huge success as well… I know because I found my son with the entire container sitting at the table with a big smile on his face… and several cookies with little nibble marks in them!

Oh, thank you for this post!!! I’ve been craving goldfish crackers for a while now. And those oreos look soooo much yummier than actual Oreos.

@Belle Oh, they are! They are so much better. I didn’t admit how many I’ve already eaten, but let’s just say that I will need to put in overtime at the gym this week! LOL! If you try the goldfish soon could let me know how they turn out?

@Juliette You may be hating me later. Just saying! :-)

I have been wanting to try and make my own graham crackers because while I like the ones from the box, I think maybe being made from scratch they might not break as easy when trying to make smores. You have given me inspiration.

@kelleyn This recipe would be perfect for smores. They are still slightly crispy but have a little chewiness to them too. And you can leave off the extra sugar on top if you are going to put chocolate and marshmallows on top… of course, you could leave it on there too if you were feeling particularly naughty that day! :-) All these from scratch recipes put to shame all the ones from the box. They are waaay better!

Gold Fish and Teddy Grahams are always stashed in our suitcases on our return trips from the US, and requested of Papa when he’s there for work too. Somethings you just can’t live without !!

Everybody here at the studio comletely understands the importance (and neccesity!) of cookied (and macaroons….) though unfortunately we don’t always find the time to make them ourselves… probably we should reserve more time for cookie-baking!
