I am always on the hunt for great, personalized gift ideas at this time of year, with Mother’s Day quickly approaching and Father’s Day soon after. Not only are these coffee mugs pretty and affordable, they are fun to make as well!

At our last Craftenhagen event, we painted our own coffee mugs.  It was so much fun to sit around, relaxing and painting, and chit chatting the night away!   The ladies blew me away with their designs.  Some came knowing exactly what they were going to make, while others winged it.  One thing was certain, every design was unique and amazing!  A couple of the ladies made an extra mug for me just so I could show you their designs (mixed in with a few from my daughter, Hailey, and me!)

To make your own diy coffee mugs, you only need three supplies: porcelain paint, coffee mugs, and paint brushes.  Simply paint your design (we used porcelain paint by pebeo), then allow the paint to set for 24 hours.  Check the back of your paint, but ours needed to bake at a 350 degrees for 30 minutes.  Afterwards, your coffee mugs are dishwasher and heat safe!

Some extra tips: 1. Use a pencil to draw your design on the mug.  It washes off in the dishwasher after it is baked!  2. Use a stiff, fine tip brush, like these from Blick, to paint words and small details.  3.  A light hand helps each design come out cleaner.  4.  Grab a dauber, like these from Martha Stewart, to make quick, even polka dots!

I would have loved an extra of each design, including the red hearts, the tea bag, and the Japanese silhouette… but here is a little video to show you more!

Interested in joining us for the next Craftenhagen event?  They are open to anyone who would like to attend.  Check out our Facebook group for the details!

I have been thinking about buying another lounge chair lately, so I have been poking around the web seeing what is available.  I thought I would show you my top ten favorites, some budget friendly and others not so much!   I just couldn’t stop at ten, though, so instead you get 12 to choose from!

traveling-mama-scandilicious-baking

I came across this beautiful cookbook, called Scandilicious Baking by Signe Johansen, and immediately bought it.  Since arriving in Scandinavia we have tried every pastry we have come across and have yet to be disappointed.  Not only does this cookbook give some of the tastiest recipes in English, the pages are also full of mouth watering and stunning images.

First on my list to make are the Santa Lucia buns.  They are typically made at Christmas and became one of my absolute favorite treats when one of my Swedish friends made them for an international Christmas party we threw.  You won’t tell if I cheat and eat them now will you?

Here is a little peek so you can see what I mean:

Anyone else’s mouth watering?  Scandilicious Baking is available, both at Amazon UK and Amazon in the US, so grab yourself a little bite of Scandinavia today!  Oh, and Happy May 1st, too!

a spring {facelift}

A little nip and tuck never hurts, right?  Especially when it is in the bedroom!  It is certainly a less painful route, I think!

I went back to light linens on the bed, like it was when we first moved in.  I’m sure the darker colors will be back later, but for now I am enjoying everything feeling airy and clean.  Some of the things I have added to the room are the Normann Copenhagen table, a Moroccan Wedding blanket, and fresh flowers, which to me always say spring, even if the weather outside is still a bit cool!  I brought in a lamp that has been hiding in the basement waiting for the right place and I think I may have finally found a home for it… maybe!  {smiles}

Our friends always tease us when they come to visit, telling us that our house is never the same twice and they are right.  I blame it partially on my wanderlust… We have been in this house for a little over a year and for us that is a long time!  So, if I cannot move houses, then I will just move everything around instead!  It is fun for me as well.  I feel as though my home is a bit like a canvas that I can constantly play with!

the {moroccan} inspired wardrobe

Morocco is extraordinarily vibrant, a true feast to the senses.  It is over the top… almost bigger than life.  It is stunning and crazy… with barely restrained chaos that somehow creates an atmosphere that is overwhelming and thrilling all at the same moment.  It is tight, cobblestoned passages in the old town and in the country it is endless green stretches of fields that reach up into an even greater azure sky.

Recently Updated35

So what does one wear in such a place as Morocco?  That is just what the folks at Next asked me recently, which of course got me very excited!  We have chatted quite a bit here about how cultures influence our wardrobes, and even recently we were talking about how much black I now wear in Denmark!

Even if you are not planning a trip to Morocco soon, why not bring a little bit of it’s colorful mystic into your wardrobe?  I suggest something fabulous, like a long maxi dress with a burst of color brought in with a sweater and great accessories!

What about you?  What city or country does your wardrobe reflect?

prague12

My husband just spent the last three days in Prague (lucky, lucky him!!) while the kids and I stayed at home.  I made him promise that he would take loads of photos and bring back a gift or two to make up for leaving us behind and he did not disappoint!  This bakery became a quick favorite of his… he told me he visited it four times in three days, so I think that is a definite sign of two things: 1) His wife was not with him.  I would never let him eat that many pastries!  LOL!  and 2) It was totally worth the splurge!

prague13

Located in the City Center of Prague, just two blocks from the Old Town Square, Bakeshop is not only quaint and pretty, but it also has delicious pastries and amazing coffee.  When my husband says the coffee is good, I believe him!  He knows his stuff!

See anything you would want to try?  I do!  And as if I didn’t already want to see Prague badly enough, well, now I REALLY want to go!  I guess we will just have to visit vicariously for now.  What kind of places do you like to look for when you travel?

Have you ever been to Prague?  If so, what did you love about it?

Recently Updated33 It is that time of year when the washer runs around the clock and the wardrobes begin transitioning to summer.   We always spend a few hours letting the kids try on everything from the previous year.  We sort the clothing, making two piles- one to wash and one to give to charity (or the hand-me-down box for my older son’s clothes).  As the kids get older the “wear again” pile is not as small as it use to be when they were babies, but there are still definitely some things that need to be purchased.

These are a few of the things on Parker, our eight year old’s, spring wardrobe wish list…

1) The Dude t-shirt from J Crew 2) Mr Marc Boxer tee from Marc Jacobs 3) Hummel shoes 4) Slouchy Skinny Jeans from Gap 5) Gingham Swim Trunks from Gap 6) Hat from Zara Kids

getting {dressed} and vanity

by Tina on April 23, 2013

traveling-mama-diy-3

These days most bathrooms come well equipped for getting dressed in the morning, which makes having a dressing table a bit of an old fashioned idea.  My motivation for creating my own vanity table comes partly from raw survival instinct… Five people in one bathroom in the morning is a bit crazy!  I will concede to the fact that having my own little place also feels like a ridiculously extravagant luxury, especially with all five of us vying for more room!

I stole a table, a chair, and a mirror from other rooms of the house and will have to put them back soon, but I thought this was a cheaper way of giving myself a visual of how this space could look plus a little trial run to see if it was going to function for me.  And you know what?  I’m hooked!

So, now I really need to decide what direction I want to take my own space.  Here is some of my current inspiration…

round mirror

modern table + feminine details

Collages27

large mirror + clothing nearby

Collages26

modern + vintage + pink

Collages25

pretty mirrors + hanging feminine clothing

Collages24

 Victorian Chair + more pink

Collages22 Glamour + chic

I’ve got my work cut out for me and I know I will have to be patient as I search for just the right pieces, which is so hard because I want it to be amazing and finished today!  Do you like any of these inspiration images?  Do you have your own vanity area?  What in particular do you like and if you were me, what would you HAVE to have in the space?

visiting {morocco} : Numero 7

by Tina on April 22, 2013

in Morocco

Recently Updated30

When I saw Numero 7, a restaurant located in Fez, Morocco, I nearly died!  It is the perfect blend of Moroccan and Scandinavian design, two styles I hold so dear to my heart!  Fez is only about 45 minutes from Meknes, which is where we lived for three years.  This is just the kind of place that I would have LOVED to have found while we were there, but for now, we will just have to visit virtually.  Shall we take a quick peek?

Are you as thrilled as I am about the blend of old world Morocco with the black and white? Some American friends of ours actually flipped a property similar to this one into a guest house/cooking school in the old Medina (old town) while we lived in Morocco and it took a lot of work for them to get what they wanted… plus a lot of patience and perseverance.

Are you as in love with this beautiful restaurant as I am?  Anyone else want to pop in for a little tagine and couscous?  My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

diy {party} crowns + video

by Tina on April 19, 2013

in Celebrations, DIY

A little behind-the-scenes peek of Hailey’s special day… Turning twelve…

april-9-traveling-mama3

Did you notice that the girls are wearing handmade crowns in the video?  I wanted to create some special head pieces for the girls to wear at my daughter’s birthday party.  I spent days daydreaming about the possible materials and ended up with two ideas.  Both are super simple to make and can be customized for any age… even mom can wear one!

traveling-mama-diy-001

For the gold crown:

1. Punch out paper flowers.  (I also grabbed a chipboard butterfly!)

2. Glued the flowers and other embellishments to a plain headband.

3. Spray paint with color of your choice!  (I went with gold!)

Collages21

I sat one night for about thirty minutes and created this beaded crown!

traveling-mama-diy1

Beaded Crown:

1. Bead your choice of beads onto a medium gauge jewelry wire.  (Mine is about 26″ long).

2. Form into crown shape by simply twisting and bending into the desired shape.

3. Cut the end of your wire and twist the ends together to seal.  I also crimped mine to make sure there were no sharp edges.

Wear and Enjoy!
