color theory: white on {white}

Happy Monday!  Did you all have a nice weekend?  We spent Saturday relaxing a bit and getting some things done around the flat and yesterday morning we visited the flea markets.  I found a few little things, which I am sure you will see in photos over the next few weeks!

Since so many of you enjoyed the color project I did here a couple weeks ago, I thought we would give it a proper name and make it a bit more official.  So, now we will call these special weeks “Color Theory” weeks.  Each time we will explore a color theme for the week and see how these colors can be fleshed out in the home, in life, and in our creativity.  What I personally hope to learn, is the practice of seeing… of imagining, of exploring, and of applying.

Recently, I have been completely obsessed with the color white… I see it everywhere and I love it in every shade!  I started by gathering my favorite magazine images along with little things from around the house.  Then I added in some photos that I took just for this project, which was actually a great exercise for me because it really pushed me to create in multiple ways with the color palate.  (You will be seeing more of those other projects later in the week!)

What do you think?  Do you like white on white?  What I have noticed is that this color palate relies heavily upon layer tones and textures… it makes an image feel soothing without looking empty or harsh.

I love white on white – especially when there’s plenty of texture! I also love to use white in my garden… brightening a dark corner, or creating a section of coolness and purity within the border. Jo x

I have the hardest time with white on white. If a whole room is done this way I feel like either a) like I’m in a hospital or b) the shades of white have to be SO carefully put together that the reality is that they often just don’t always look great together without the help of Photoshop.

I definitely think there are great white-on-white rooms out there, but I feel like *in my opinion* as soon as people start really living in them, they start looking cluttered -and somehow unfinished- fast. At least, that’s how I felt looking through a recently purchased design book that featured rooms with a heavy white emphasis. As soon as the real world enters an white-ish space, I find myself needing enough color elsewhere in the room to make me feel visually balanced. If that makes any sense at all, ha!

I love white, and I have lots of it at home (and I agree, texture and different tones of white is the key). I admire people who can live in an entire white house, but I love color too much to be able to implement that in my own home.
