There are so many beautiful things to see this time of year in Copenhagen, but one thing you absolutely cannot miss is Christmas on the Strøget, which is the pedestrianized shopping street in Central Copenhagen.

Not only is it decked out for the holidays with lights and garland, but there are vendors selling warm pandekager (a close equivalent to the crepe), warm sugary nuts, and there is live music at pretty much every hour of the day. We recommend going after 4 when the sun has set and the lights are extra special.

The holiday window displays are so special and definitely something you should not miss out on at this time of year.  Our favorites are Illums Bolighus, Royal Copenhagen, and best of all, Illum, though all offer great shopping if you want to grab some of your holidays gifts as well!

Illum, with it’s fantastical window displays, is pure delight for young and old.  With polar bears dining with a crowd of chickens dressed in tuxedos and sprays of florals so divine you will long to reach out and touch them, these displays may warrant a second visit just to take it all in.

Next, head over to the Christmas market near the Stork Fountain where you will find everything from handmade ornaments to German bratwurst to a mini roller coaster for the kids.

You can even buy a Christmas tree if you happen to need one as well… These little mini ones are so cute!

Finish your Christmas on the Strøget visit by buying fresh greenery and flowers at the market near Magasin.  They always have great prices and beautiful choices, so whether you are staying for a few days or long term you can bring a little bit of that Christmas on the Strøget magic home with you!

Oh, it’s all so pretty! Thanks for sharing these photos. It seems like so many European cities were designed with a topping of snow in mind…

So true! We are hoping to get our first snow this week!

I can’t believe it has been almost a year since I visited you! It was so beautiful at Christmas. The windows remind me of our trips to Chicago when we would view all the windows at Marshall fields and on State Street.

I know. I was thinking of you the whole time and missing you like crazy!

We were there just this weekend! We loved it and ended our stroll with a delicious dinner at Norden Café!
Oh, we love Copenhagen!

One of my VERY favorite places to end the day!

Wonderful photos! I love the Stroget and LOVE Illum. Still have a little box I bought there long ago. Copenhagen is even better at Christmas than usual.

Happy Holidays to you, my dear! x

loved the holiday window with the illicit peeping tom elf looking up the model’s skirt not so discretely at illums – always fun to find some humor as well as holiday! we miss austria like crazy during the holidays so we were relieved to find a local christmas market in the meantime and starting to love denmark’s as well!

I know. Very Danish, I think, to be a bit naughty. 🙂
