How to Dress Up A Sweatshirt

traveling mama how to style a sweatshirt-11

One of the things that I have noticed since moving to Denmark is the popularity of sweatshirts.  They come in all different prices, from the basic collection at H&M for a few bucks, to a high design piece that will set you back a pretty penny from Designer’s Remix.  The problem I have with all of these sweatshirts is that I just feel a bit sloppy in them despite the fact that I have apparent obsession with buying them.  Rather than pairing sweatshirts with sweatpants, I like to dress up a sweatshirt with a crisp, white buttoned down shirt underneath and a pair of heels.  It adds instant glam without looking to pretentious.

We took these photos a couple days ago when a heavy fog rolled in, so I was extra grateful for the warmth of my sweatshirt, but I also added in a touch of blue because I’ve been obsessing over blue this week.

Perfect topic! I am looking for an embellished sweatshirt (with something studded or sparkled, not too short in length). Do you have any suggestions that you may have stumbled across during your fashion adventures? I looked at the Threads for Thought sweatshirt that you had posted about once but they don’t ship to Canada :(

Love your Orla Keely :)

Love this photos! The fog makes them look somehow mysterious. But how can you keep your feet warm in those shoes?! I’ve been freezing like crazy this past week in Copenhagen! And about the sweatshirts. I looove my sweaters, but I wouldn’t use them in public with sweatpants ;) Haha. But with jeans or over an elegant dress, they make a beautiful outfit!

I wasn’t going to be outside for long and it felt so much warmer after those snowy days. :-) I love sweatshirts over a dress, too!

Where on earth did you find that beautiful handbag?

I bought it while we were in London at the Orla Kiely Shop: http://travelingmama.net/london-orla-kiely-store/ Don’t blame me if I get you into trouble with that recommendation, though. {smiles} She has a shop in New York as well.

I’m sorry but you lost me on this one. I can’t wrap my head around wearing a sweatshirt in public unless I am actually commuting to/from the gym or out for a run or maybe moving house & carrying boxes or some other strenuous endeavour that calls for sloppy clothes. Just like sweatpants & gym shoes, I draw the line at wearing sweatshirts in public except whilst exercising. But I won’t rain on your parade if you want to wear them with silk and pearls.

Is that snow on the ground? High heels with bare feet seem a little chilly and slippery. I get that you were posing for photos, not going for a stroll in the cold, but I’ll stick with warm socks and boots in such weather, fashion be damned.

That’s the beauty of fashion- we each get to express our own personalities in how we dress and the culture that surrounds us. :-)
