Denmark is gearing up for Fastelavn, or what some call a Danish Carnival. We had never heard of fastelavn before moving to Denmark, so we found it to be very interesting to suddenly be thrust into a new holiday. It is a little like American Halloween where all of the kids get dressed up in costumes but rather than going door to door for candy, the kids line up to take a turn beating a barrel with a stick, like a piñata, hoping they will be the one to spill out all of the candy.
Our kids’ school really gets into it and today our kids woke up a little early just so they could get dressed up before their big debut on the school’s cat walk. There are prizes for best costume and more, so today when I dropped them off there were kids coming in dressed like a thanksgiving feast, a fairy, and much more. One of the best parts about moving to another country is that you get double the holidays to celebrate and I know Fastelavn is one that my kids are happy to enjoy each year.
This time, I let them decide what they would get dressed up as and Hailey chose to be a nerd, while Parker opted to be a businessman. They both said it was okay for me to show you their outfits and I’m so glad because I thought they looked adorable! Here are my nerd and my businessman…
