August is here and for many families that also means back to school.  Making lunches can be a boring and monotonous chore, so I decided to try to make it fun by adding a little humor.  I’ve got a few tools to share with you that will help you keep your kids’ lunches cute and healthy plus not too time consuming for you!

Last year I ordered my first bento style boxes and I absolutely love them.  The ones that come with compartments or inserts are helpful because they keep food separated.  I also like to write a note to each child so they will know that I am thinking about them even while they are at school. My mom used to do that for me when I was little and I absolutely loved it!  She always wrote on my napkin, which is fine, but these little notes are extra fun, too.  (I draw pictures for the littlest who doesn’t read yet.)

I also try to throw in a few unexpected surprises, like black carrots, just to stretch my picky eater’s minds.  (My boys thought they were SO cool!)  Sometimes if I am in a bind I will throw in some potato chips but my kids won’t eat most of them, so sticking with fresh fruits and vegetables is the quickest way to ensure happy eaters.  My littlest is taking his lunch to school for the first time and begged to eat his lunch as soon as he saw it.  There is something about a sandwich with a smiley face! Yum!
