If there is one cafe that is a must at the holidays, it is definitely the Royal Smushi Cafe, which is located right on the Strøget, so you can easily pop in for a little break from shopping and seeing the holiday windows at Illum. The decor changes with the seasons, and at Christmas you will find the shelves lined with a variety of ornaments and holiday decor to choose from. There is also a special Christmas menu that includes a few traditional Danish treats only served at the holidays such as æbleskiver (a cross between a donut and a pancake) and ris a la mande (a delicious rice pudding with almonds and cherry sauce). They even have a special Christmas Smushi menu, which include a stunning variety of miniature traditional open faced Danish sandwiches.
Grab a seat by the window and enjoy the view over the gorgeous courtyard which backs up to the Royal Copenhagen Flagship store. You may even catch a glimpse of a very special guest if your timing is right. A cafe such as the Royal Smushi Cafe is worth a visit any time of year, but at Christmas it is an extra special treat.
