We spent the weekend enjoying sunshine, despite the freezing temps. The days are growing longer and it feels as though spring should be here, but we are still wearing our fur boots, or as they are called in Danish, bamse støvler (teddy bear boots). I think teddy bear boots is an adorable name, don’t you? That is one of the things I love about learning other languages. There are just some things that sound better in other languages and sometimes words that are, to me, more fun to say.
Some other favorites? Wakha, or OK in Arabic, sounds like you have a fly stuck in your throat. Oui, or yes in French, is just so pretty. Xie Xie, or thank you in Mandarin, is a very humble way of showing gratitude. Mi amor, or my love in Spanish, feels like an intoxicating version of “honey” or “babe.”
Do you have a favorite word in your native tongue or maybe one you have learned?
