The No Fuss Birthday Party

Valentina Fussell No fuss Birthday Party Two-2

I learned a very valuable lesson about my littlest son, Landon, a couple years ago.  He, completely unlike his mother, hates having a big party with lots of fuss.  After years of creating beautiful parties with matching decor, the perfect party games, and even gifts that match the theme, I realized that all the hoopla completely stressed Landon out.  He definitely prefers a no fuss birthday party.  The kid is pretty high energy as it is, so when you add lots of cameras going off in his face, way too much sugar, and a hoard of boys smashing balloons at each others’ faces, he gets really stressed which leads to him being super hyper and having to put into time out throughout his party.

Ummm, yeah, what kind of parent puts their kid in time out during his own party?  The one who realizes how foolish she was when she created the event!

So, this year, we invited the boys from his class, which thankfully only totals 10, and we created a no fuss birthday party where he got to frost the cake with me, choose the treats, and bring down his favorite animals for a cozy and personal celebration that he directed.

When his friends arrived, we kept everyone calm with perler beads, which actually the boys got really into.  We snapped a few shots of the table beforehand and then spent the rest of the time playing, creating, and ended with popcorn and a movie.  This entire shindig felt absolutely counterintuitive to the way my mother raised me, but, in the end, Landon had the best birthday party and that is all that matters, right?

I can empathize with Landon. I’ve never liked making a big to-do on my birthday, which a lot of my (extroverted) friends don’t understand. I’m perfectly content with having a few people over for pizza or tacos rather than going out somewhere with a large crowd.
