I was putting my makeup on a few weeks ago and decided my outfit definitely needed a little red lipstick, but as I searched through my stash I realized that I didn’t own a single true red lipstick. This utterly perplexed me. How could I not own a red lipstick? I mean isn’t a red lipstick the very right and privilege of being a woman? It is one of the few things we girls get to do that the guys (mostly) do not and yet I was shocked when I reached out to my family and girlfriends to discover that I was not the only one who had forfeited my right to a set of dazzling red lips. In fact, more than half of the ladies I chatted with swore they did not have the right age, skin tone, or hair color to pull off red lipstick.
I felt determination setting into my bones. As if the world had been turned upside down and it was now my mission to turn it right side up. Girls, red lipstick is like a potent formula to feeling confident and fantastic and don’t think for a minute that any of us should wear it for the guys, even if they will appreciate it, because red lipstick is really about making us girls feel like women. One day in mine and I felt like I could literally leap tall buildings (more on my new red lipstick super powers later, though!)
Today I get to share with you some of my best friends and family’s favorite shades of red lipstick and a little about how it makes them feel to have it on, and I hope at the same time prove why every woman can wear red lipstick … and should…
My girlfriend, Anya, of Anya Adores, recommends Ellis Red, the signature color of Ellis Faas, a Dutch Makeup Company. Anya says, “It reminds me a bit of of the ladies from Mad men as it’s very classic. It’s simply awesome xx”
My girlfriend, Ali, totally sold me when she described how she felt wearing Nars’ Shanghai Express: “I remember wearing it out for the first time and dancing to Etta James’ “Sunday Kind of Love” and felt so glamorous and beautiful. I wore all black and that red lipstick. It’s a really lovely red with blue undertones that works really well with my skin, and lasts through the night. It also has a really nice matte finish that allows you to feel understated but still sexy and mysterious. I’ve even worn it with blue jeans and a white tee shirt but it can also make a huge statement when paired with an all-neutral outfit.”
Liz, my girlfriend who you might remember from her baby shower, suggests Dolce & Gabbana’s Ruby 180. She says, “I love it because every time I wear, I feel a little ‘Hollywood glam’! I love that look and when I get the chance to dress up and go out, I just have to wear it!”
My Thea Tina, my namesake and one of my personal fashion icons, swears by Maybelline’s SuperStay 24 Lipstick in Keep Up the Flame. She says, “I really liked it and I especially liked that it lasted so many hours even while drinking and eating.” It also happens to be a budget friendly choice, so if you are looking for a quick and long lasting lipstick that won’t break the bank, this might just be your lipstick!
I hope these recommendations will encourage you to give red lipstick a try, especially with Valentine’s Day just a couple days away. The key to finding the right red for you no matter what the tone of your skin or color of your hair, is trying a few. If the color seems too stark at first, try blotting once and toning it down just a bit for daytime use. Whichever red you choose, pair it with a natural eye to keep your look fresh and sexy without being too stark.
Now I would love to hear from some of you. Do you have a favorite red lipstick that you would recommend as well? How does it make you feel when you wear it?
An extra big thank you so much to all of my friends and family who wrote in!
